Ik kom uit een klein dorp in New Mexico, VS. Na de universiteit waar ik Statistiek. Politicologie, Duits en Spaans studeerde, ging ik een jaar Engelse les geven op een gymnasium in Letmathe, Nordrhein-Westfalen in Duitsland. Wilde dan niet terug en mocht een 2e jaar les geven in Gronau, net tegenover Enschede. In het weekeinde vaker met de fiets kaas en gestampte muisjes kopen. Toen het 2e jaar afgelopen was wilde ik nog steeds terug naar de VS. Ik ging Taalwetenschap, Oostenrijkse Geschiedenis, Nederlands, Hongaars en Zweeds studeren. Na 4 jaar klaar. Wilde nog steeds niet terug naar 'the land of the free and home of the brave.' Toen dan naar de GU in Amsterdam (Gemeentelijk Universiteit van Amsterdam) waar ik Slavische Taal (Russisch) en Literatuur studeerde. Na 3 jaar klaar. Toen ontmoete ik Sander uit Lisse in de Monopool op de Amstel. 2 weken nadat we elkaar hebben ontmoet ging ik bij hem wonen. We wilden dan naar Australie verhuizen. Alle visums etc. klaar. Eerst maar een vakantie in Thailand. 14 jaar later waren we nog steeds in Thailand. 4 jaar een restaurant gehad op Kho Phangan en 10 jaar Engelse les gegeven in Bangkok. Toen terug naar Nederland. Alle jaren bij elkaar 43 jaar samen gewoond. Vorig jaar in februari stierf Sander aan COPD, een longziekte. Nu is het een jaar geleden. Ik ben mijn nieuw leven aan het ontdekken. De eerste 11 maanden na zijn dood voelde ik me verdrietig en bleef gewoon thuis. 1 januari dit jaar bracht me in een soort nieuwe wereld. Daar bevind ik me nu. En vind het heel leuk om nieuwe mensen van overal te ontmoeten.
I come from a small town in New Mexico, USA. After university where I studied Statistics. After studying political science, German and Spanish, I taught English for a year at a grammar school in Letmathe, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Didn't want to return and was allowed to teach for a second year in Gronau, just opposite Enschede. Buy cheese and mashed mice more often by bike at the weekend. When the 2nd year ended I still wanted to return to the US. I went on to study Linguistics, Austrian History, Dutch, Hungarian and Swedish. Finished after 4 years. Still didn't want to return to 'the land of the free and home of the brave.' Then to the GU in Amsterdam (Municipal University of Amsterdam) where I studied Slavic Language (Russian) and Literature. Finished after 3 years. Then I met Sander from Lisse in the Monopool on the Amstel. 2 weeks after we met I moved in with him. We then wanted to move to Australia. All visas etc. ready. First a holiday in Thailand. 14 years later we were still in Thailand. Had a restaurant on Kho Phangan for 4 years and taught English in Bangkok for 10 years. Then back to the Netherlands. All together we lived together for 43 years. Last year in February, Sander died of COPD, a lung disease. Now it's been a year. I am discovering my new life. The first 11 months after his death I felt sad and just stayed home. January 1st this year brought me into a new world of sorts. That's where I find myself now. And I really enjoy meeting new people from everywhere.
